The money offered for the white dingo skin by poachers and tourists further incent the stockmen to shoot the animal, despite the fact that their greedy station manager wants to keep it alive as “tourist bait”. However, none of them have reckoned on the arrival of Josie Swales – a female ex-journalist with a passion to preserve and protect native animals and the feisty nature to make it happen. Even the White Dingo finds himself fascinated by the woman invading his territory.
The plot twists and turns and the action keeps coming amidst the backdrop of the Kimberley Ranges as the conservationists and the hunters pit their wits against each other with surprising outcomes. The only character truly at home in this environment, the White Dingo surveys the human’s actions and follows his deep rooted instinct to survive.
The author, Jack Elstone, has worked in various areas of the Australian outback as a ringer, professional trapper and saddle maker. In his words, “This book is an attempt to empower the reader on decision making in regards to conservation of habitat and the culling of native species. It is up to the reader to decide the outcome of the issues mentioned”.
The White Dingo is a great Australian story. It is heart wrenching and confronting whilst being entertaining, amusing and educational. It is a book that all lovers of wildlife, the outback and good literature should read.
