Claude Martin, soldier, adventurer, architect, banker, intellectual, lived from 1735 to 1800. Beginning when Claude, enlisted as a soldier in France, this first volume of the Ferenghi Quartet takes the reader into exotic lands, through France, India, England during war and peace, through times of unrest and prosperity. From humble beginnings, this self-made man rose to the position of Major-General with the British East India Company in 1763. In Seeds of Empire, Gwayne Naug reveals a man swept along by the twists and swirls of fate.
When Gwayne Naug first gazed upon the Claude Martin’s portrait in a school in Lucknow, India she knew she would write his story. In the following years Gwayne visited Lyons, his birthplace in France, listened to peoples’ stories about Martin in Lucknow and was able to access documents about him in the Indian government’s archives. The research has paid off.
From bloody battles to romantic interludes the historical content rings true with scenes graphically described and true-to-life characters well-defined. Although the book is an historical work the style is modern, providing the reader with a strong, personal and direct link to the past. The author is obviously fascinated with her subject; the writing is clear, unambiguous, moving the reader through an incredible story that will capture the imagination; it’s too good to put down.
The historical facts of Claude’s life are cleverly threaded into a work of fiction - a romance, an historical novel, an adventure novel – but this story is true.
