The story of the famous Australian Waler horse is one that records with pride the remarkable journey this original stock horse made from a domestic animal to a war horse without equal. The Boer War and WW1 saw many thousands shipped overseas and only the advent of mechanisation in 1940 saw the Waler horse decline from military use.

This book not only sings the Waler's praises, but tracks its worldwide reputation as a horse without equal. You will read about the logistics involved in using horses in a war; about the huge problems associated with the horse lines in Egypt and in France where hundreds of horses were picketed row after row; and about the often forgotten heavy horses that pulled the gun carriages and hauled ammunition and stores.

Yes, they were Walers, but who supplied the saddlery? What happened to the refuse? Who looked aft er injured and sick horses? Where did the fodder come from? Read about all this and much more as today's heritage horse owners tell their stories.

You won't be able to put this book down and you will gain great compassion for the brave Waler horse and the few descendants that still exist in Australia today.
