When Demelza Catch and her father inherit a grand old limestone house, they decide to leave the city and move to the small Wheatbelt town of Ringlet. Here, Demelza is haunted by a sweet smelling mist and a series of reoccurring earthly vibrations. Demelza suspects her deceased grandfather may be somehow responsible, and becomes obsessed with finding the key to his mysterious basement.

With the help of her four new friends, she eventually unlocks a trapdoor which leads to a bizarre collection of long lost inventions. Among them are a faceless grandfather clock, and a strange mechanical four-poster bed that can transport its occupants to dream-like worlds where anything is possible. The Dream Machine!

During the adventures that follow, the five children encounter a brontosaurus, a giant pelican, a beautiful sparkling-eyed princess and a friendly castle guard. They ride the waves of a custard ocean, learn how to fly, and experience the terror of an earthquake in a magical jewelled kingdom. They discover extraordinary beauty and unimaginable dangers. But when an unpopular classmate threatens to expose their secret, they're forced to reassess their situation.

Then one day, Demelza finds out about the existence of a book that was written years earlier by her grandfather's friend. The book contains valuable information about her grandfather, the dream machine and the possible deathly consequences of their discovery.
