This is a writing of fiction, part adventure, part romance, part New Testament and part history of the Egyptian and Roman times.
The orthodox view is that Joseph, the husband of Mary had to be a man advanced in years, to protect the virginity of Mary. And yet, from New Testament records, only a man in his prime could have safeguarded wife and child from the paranoid Herod, a country overthrown by a foreign power and lawless brigandry.
And what of the brothers of Jesus: Simon and James, Joseph and Judas? And sisters unnamed? Obviously Joseph had a previous life. But he did not die years before the mature Jesus began his ministry. Was not one of the first comments made about Jesus "Isn't this the carpenter's son?" – a recent recollection surely.
This tells Joseph's story, and begins before he was called to marry Mary. This novel gives the old story a new human face.
