Lighter Than Air

Don Worth didn't want the job Jan Garreth offered him as Chief Flying Instructor of a defunct flying school in a small Australian country town ... until he met her.

Just seeing her weakened him. The five Cessna aircraft sitting idle in a large hangar tempted him almost as much as her clear brown eyes and slim figure. But it was her determination to restart the flying school after an air crash that had killed her husband Jeff and his uncle Reg that finally persuaded him to give it a shot, despite the questions lurking at the back of his mind.

Was the crash an accident ... or sabotage? Who had torched the crop duster planes in the large hangar that the flying school now leased? Were the two incidents connected?

Don's search for answers leads to a fast moving adventure, romance and a final terrifying flight but it was a job he would not have missed for the world!

Plane Wrapper

Carbon monoxide laden exhaust fumes pour suddenly into Cessna 172 VH-TLS's cabin. Hot, dizzy, confused and with a splitting headache, the pilot tries to land. Flying school manager Jan and their new instructor watch horrified as it dives into a paddock and explodes into flames.

For CFI Don and engineer Tommo, what seems pilot neglect doesn't add up. The pilot's fiancee, afraid what he called 'carrying for cash' is crime-related, blames sabotage.

Don and Tommo's search for answers leads into a web of menace, murder and violence; threatening phone calls; a warning on a cassette tape; cars forced off the road, one a fatality, one a narrow escape for Jan. Why does someone try to recover the cassette, smashing it in the attempt? What do the cryptic entries in Murray's diary mean?

Romance is budding for the instructor, and horseplay during a picnic for two at the lake has a totally unexpected outcome.

Don intercepts a vicious attempt to kidnap Jan but is unable to avert a second, and both Jan and the instructor are kidnapped and locked in a shed at a private airstrip. To secure their release unharmed, he agrees to fly to an outback airstrip and bring back two locked and sealed cases. Having solved the diary entries, he knows what they contain and why; but what begins as just discomfort for the kidnapped pair while they wait for his return suddenly becomes a night of terror. He returns to an explosive climax, a flight with a leaking fuel tank, a dead engine, an unlit runway and a race to land in the face of an approaching thunderstorm.

With the cassette repaired, its importance becomes obvious, and a showdown at a second outback airstrip exposes the ringleader. A necessary deal wraps up a case which brings a highly satisfying result for the group.

A final day holds surprises for Don but there's no way he'd change any of it.

Clive N. Chatfield

Clive Chatfield has two daughters, half-a-dozen grandchildren and shares his home in suburban Melbourne with a cat. He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from Melbourne University and spent his working life as a tramways engineer. He learned to fly at the age of 56 and has seen much of Australia from the air – and not from 30,000 feet.

An inveterate reader of murder, mystery and western novels, he decided soon after retiring to write some of his own. The first draft of Lighter Than Air began in 1988 while he attended a writing course at Holmesglen TAFE. Spurred on by his (late) wife Joyce and a good result against some 300 entries when he entered a re-written Lighter Than Air in a competition in 1995, he has continued writing novels, mostly as an escape from reality, using the setting and characters from the first as a background to others. Friends and relatives have read his novels; their response has finally led him to release the first to the public.
