Bit of A Super Hero: Choosing the Challenge - My Journey with Cancer

There is a saying: When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

Janet Shaw is a remarkable woman.

Many times throughout her life, she has drawn on her determination and inner strength to change the way she has looked at things.

In Janet Shaw’s first memoir, Beyond the Red Door, her opening line was: “In some ways, it’s probably a lucky thing that I was born with cancer.” She considered it lucky, because she had no memory of that time of her life. But when retinoblastoma, the rare genetic eye cancer she was born with, triggered breast cancer and a rare sarcoma in her adult life, Janet was forced to face a challenge that she thought she’d never manage.

This inspiring account of Janet’s ongoing journey with cancer is told with honesty, humour, insight and sensitivity.

It is a heartwarming and heartbreaking story told by a truly inspirational Bit of a Super Hero.

Janet Shaw

Janet Shaw was born in Perth, Western Australia. Always passionate about writing and the world of books, she set her sights on one day becoming an author. Her first book, Beyond the Red Door, a memoir, was published by Allen and Unwin in 2004. Janet then turned her hand to writing fiction for children. Some of her short stories have been prizewinners or highly commended in competitions. As a freelance writer, she has written articles for the web, mentored emerging writers, and been a ghost-writer. Her recent book, Bit of A Super Hero, is a sequel to Beyond the Red Door, completing her life story.

We were all saddened at Palmer Higgs to hear of Janet’s passing. Our association with Janet as one of our authors, showed her to be a person of immense pride with a can-do attitude. Faced with a terminal illness her strength of character and her ability to keep smiling has been an inspiration to us all. Our thoughts are with her family and friends as they deal with their sad loss. 5th December 2012.

Janet and her faithful companion, Sabah
